Sausage

Biscuits and Gravy with Sausage and Egg Breakfast Casserole recipe that combines classic Southern flavors. It’s perfect for brunch or a make-ahead breakfast.

Ingredients:

1 can refrigerated biscuits (16 oz)

1 pound ground breakfast sausage

6 large eggs

2 cups shredded cheddar cheese

2 1/2 cups milk (divided)

1/4 cup all-purpose flour

1/2 tsp black pepper

1/4 tsp garlic powder

1/4 tsp onion powder

Salt to taste

Optional: red pepper flakes for spice

Instructions:

1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a 9×13 inch baking dish.

2. Cook the sausage:

In a skillet, brown the sausage over medium heat. Break it up into crumbles as it cooks. Once browned, remove sausage from the pan and set it aside.

3. Make the gravy:

In the same skillet (with the sausage drippings), add the flour and stir to create a roux. Cook for 1-2 minutes until the raw flour taste is gone.

Gradually whisk in 2 cups of milk, stirring constantly to prevent lumps.

Cook until the gravy thickens (about 5-7 minutes), then season with black pepper, garlic powder, onion powder, and salt to taste. Stir the sausage back into the gravy and remove from heat.

4. Prepare the biscuit layer:

Cut the refrigerated biscuits into quarters and place them in the bottom of the greased baking dish.

5. Prepare the egg mixture:

In a bowl, whisk together the eggs and the remaining 1/2 cup of milk. Season with a pinch of salt and pepper.

6. Assemble the casserole:

Pour the sausage gravy evenly over the biscuit pieces in the baking dish.

Pour the egg mixture on top of the gravy layer.

Sprinkle the shredded cheddar cheese evenly over the top.

7. Bake:

Bake for 30-35 minutes, or until the eggs are set, the biscuits are cooked through, and the cheese is melted and golden on top.

8. Serve: Allow the casserole to cool for a few minutes, then slice and serve.

Enjoy this comforting and delicious breakfast casserole!
