Beans
Ham & White Beans that’s perfect for cozy meals.
Ingredients:
1 lb package dried Great Northern beans
1 lb ham bone, hocks, shanks, or diced ham
2 tsp onion powder
1 tsp garlic powder
1 bay leaf
1 tsp black pepper (adjust to taste)
6 cups water (or chicken broth for extra flavor)
Instructions:
1. Prep the Beans:
Rinse the dried beans well, then soak them in water overnight (or for at least 8 hours). Drain and rinse the beans before cooking.
2. Cook the Beans:
In a large pot or Dutch oven, add the soaked beans, ham (bone or diced), onion powder, garlic powder, bay leaf, and black pepper.
3. Add Liquid:
Pour in 6 cups of water or chicken broth. Bring the mixture to a boil over medium-high heat.
4. Simmer:
Once boiling, reduce the heat to low. Cover and let it simmer for about 2–3 hours, or until the beans are tender and the flavors are well combined.
Stir occasionally and add more water if necessary, depending on how thick or brothy you want the dish.
5. Remove Bay Leaf & Serve:
Discard the bay leaf, adjust seasoning as desired, and serve the beans hot.
Optional Additions:
Veggies: Add chopped carrots, celery, or potatoes during the last hour of cooking.
Greens: Stir in fresh spinach or kale for the final 10 minutes for a nutritional boost.
Seasoning: Add a dash of smoked paprika or crushed red pepper for a bit of heat.
Enjoy! This dish pairs wonderfully with cornbread or over rice for a filling meal.
