Homemade Angel Biscuits

Homemade Angel Biscuits
Ingredients:
– 5 cups all-purpose flour
– ¼ cup sugar
– 1 tablespoon baking powder
– 1 teaspoon baking soda
– 1 teaspoon salt
– 2 cups cold buttermilk
– ½ cup unsalted butter, cold and cubed
– ½ cup shortening, cold
– 2 teaspoons active dry yeast
– ¼ cup warm water (between 105°F and 115°F)
Instructions:
1. Activate the Yeast:
In a small bowl, combine 2 teaspoons of active dry yeast with ¼ cup of warm water (105°F-115°F). Allow it to sit for approximately 5 minutes until it becomes foamy.
2. Mix Dry Ingredients:
In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the flour, sugar, baking powder, baking soda, and salt.
3. Cut in the Butter and Shortening:
Using a pastry cutter or your fingers, incorporate the cold cubed butter and shortening into the flour mixture until it resembles coarse crumbs.
4. Combine Wet and Dry Ingredients:
Add the activated yeast and cold buttermilk to the dry ingredients. Stir gently until just combined.
5. Knead & Roll Out Dough:
Lightly flour a work surface and transfer the dough. Knead it gently 4-5 times until it is smooth. Roll the dough out to a thickness of about ½ inch.
6. Cut Biscuits:
Utilize a biscuit cutter or a glass to cut out rounds from the dough.
7. Let Them Rise:
Arrange the biscuits on a parchment-lined baking sheet and cover them loosely with a towel. Allow them to rest for 30-45 minutes to enable the yeast to activate.
8. Bake:
Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C). Bake the biscuits for 12-15 minutes or until they are golden brown on top.
9. Brush with Butter & Serve:
Optionally, brush the biscuits with melted butter after baking for added flavor. Serve them warm with honey, butter, or jam!
