Smothered Hamburger Steak

Smothered Hamburger Steak
Ingredients:
– 1 lb. ground beef
– 1 egg
– 1/3 cup bread crumbs
– 1/2 tsp. black pepper
– 1 tsp. salt
– 1/2 tsp. garlic powder
– 1/2 tsp. onion powder
– 1 tsp. Worcestershire sauce
– 1 tbsp. oil (for frying)
For the Gravy:
– 1 medium onion, sliced
– 1 cup mushrooms, sliced (optional)
– 2 tbsp. butter
– 2 tbsp. all-purpose flour
– 2 cups beef broth
– 1/2 tsp. Worcestershire sauce
– 1/2 tsp. salt
– 1/4 tsp. black pepper
Instructions:
Prepare the Hamburger Patties:
In a mixing bowl, combine the ground beef, egg, bread crumbs, salt, black pepper, garlic powder, onion powder, and Worcestershire sauce. Shape the mixture into four equal patties.
Cook the Patties:
Heat the oil in a skillet over medium heat. Cook the patties for approximately 4-5 minutes on each side, or until they are browned and fully cooked. Remove the patties from the skillet and set them aside.
Make the Gravy:
In the same skillet, add butter and sauté the sliced onions (and mushrooms, if desired) until they become tender. Sprinkle in the flour and cook for 1-2 minutes until it turns a light golden color. Gradually whisk in the beef broth, then add Worcestershire sauce, salt, and black pepper. Allow the mixture to simmer until it thickens.
Combine the Steaks and Gravy:
Return the hamburger steaks to the skillet, spoon the gravy over them, and let them simmer for an additional 5 minutes.
Serve and Enjoy:
Serve the dish hot alongside mashed potatoes or rice.
