Cabbage Rolls
Polish Cabbage Rolls
Ingredients:
– 1 large head of cabbage
– 1 lb ground pork
– 1 lb ground beef
– 1 cup cooked white rice
– 1 medium onion, finely chopped
– 2 garlic cloves, minced
– 1 egg
– 1 tsp salt
– 1/2 tsp black pepper
– 2 cups tomato sauce or crushed tomatoes
– 1 cup beef broth
– 1 tsp sugar (optional)
Instructions:
1. Prepare the Cabbage:
Remove the core from the cabbage and blanch the leaves in boiling water for 3-5 minutes, or until they become flexible. Carefully take out the leaves and allow them to cool.
2. Make the Filling:
In a mixing bowl, combine the ground pork, ground beef, cooked rice, onion, garlic, egg, salt, and pepper, mixing thoroughly until well blended.
3. Assemble the Rolls:
Place a cabbage leaf on a flat surface, add 2-3 tablespoons of the filling near the base, fold in the sides, and roll it up tightly. Continue this process with the remaining leaves and filling.
4. Cook the Rolls:
Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Spread a layer of tomato sauce in the bottom of a baking dish and arrange the rolls seam-side down. Pour the remaining tomato sauce and beef broth over the rolls. If desired, add sugar to the sauce for a touch of sweetness. Cover the dish with foil and bake for 1.5 to 2 hours, basting occasionally with the sauce.
5. Serve:
Serve warm, accompanied by sour cream or crusty bread for an authentic experience!
